Vietnam to apply technology for natural disaster prevention

9:0:13, 10/09/2019 The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development yesterday organized a seminar themed “Technology application for natural disaster prevention”.

Speaking at the seminar, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that the S-shaped country is one of five countries most vulnerable to climate change impacts; accordingly, the increasing frequency of extreme weather events have caused serious consequences to environment, the country’s sustainable socio-economy growth.

Hence, technology application is needed for forecast mission and management and reconstruction.

On the same day, the Party Committee’s Propaganda and Education Board of the Mekong delta province of Kien Giang and the People’s Committee in Phu Quoc Island District organized a press briefing on inundation in Phu Quoc island lately – the worst flooding in the island so far.

Chairman of Phu Quoc People’s Committee Mai Van Huynh said this year flood was caused by climate change, relentless torrential downpours within a week and high tide. Moreover, illegal construction of houses in rivers and stream made the condition worse.

In the next time, he said , the local authority will invite experts and competent agencies to forecast weather condition, frequencies of wind and rain and tide to include hypothetical plans for infrastructure construction.

Additionally, the island district leader petitioned Kien Giang People’s committee and relevant agencies to have synchronous study of river, drainage system of the island.

More importantly, Duong Dong town must improve drainage system to suit the present development and build embankment in order to deter people from encroach Ong Tri , Somaco canals and Duong Dong River.

Authority should approve the detailed zoning plan of the 1:500 scale of Duong Dong and An Thoi towns as well as urban development project as a basis for infrastructure construction of Phu Quoc District.
