'Golden' rain to decrease the Mekong Delta salty drought peak

17:25:41, 13/04/2020 On the morning of April 13, a long rain across Ben Tre and An Giang provinces solved the "thirst" for thousands of hectares of coconut, fruit trees and seedlings.

After several months of hot weather causing drought, saltwater intrusion in Ben Tre, in the morning of 13/4 the rain lasted more than an hour across Ben Tre province to solve the "thirst" for thousands of hectares of coconut, fruit trees and seedlings.

According to Mr.Pham Anh Linh, Vice Chairman of Cho Lach District People's Committee, the district has more than 10,000ha of land for fruit tree planting and seedling production.

Last time, the drought directly affected the production of the people. They have to pay more to transport fresh water to irrigate the plants. The rain created timely "refreshing" water for the people 's production areas.

Mr. Huynh Quang Duc, Deputy Director of Ben Tre Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the first rainy season watered more than 72,000 hectares of coconuts, nearly 30,000 hectares of orchards, seedlings, hundreds of thousands of domestic animals. (cow, goat, chicken, pig ...) of the people.

Besides, the rain reduces the salinity in canals and gardens. However, according to Mr. Duc, it is not known whether the rainy season will come or the heat will return, so people are not subjective and must always actively store water to serve production and living in the future.

After many days of intense heat, on April 13 morning, heavy rain on a large scale, lasting more than 3 hours in An Giang province, contributed to the settlement and made the weather cool again. This is referred to as a "golden rain," easing the intense, sultry sunshine amid the salty drought peak.

According to Mr. Luu Van Ninh, Director of An Giang Hydrometeorology Station, this is the longest and heaviest rain in nearly two months. In particular, the rain came just in time when An Giang was suffering from the intense sun of 38-39 degrees Celsius, lasting for many days;
Many localities in the province had to cope with the historical heat wave, many canals and rivers dried up, water, trees, and crops lacked of fresh water, life of people faced many difficulties.
In particular, the "golden rain" has helped nearly 17,000 hectares of An Giang province forest are facing the warning level of forest fire level 5, extremely dangerous, timely reduced the risk of fire. According to many farmers in the provinces of An Giang province, the rain provides timely irrigation for newly-harvested Summer-Autumn rice fields, as well as fruit and vegetable gardens, reducing the cost of pumping irrigation water and labor.

However, according to the Director of An Giang Hydrometeorology Station, this time in An Giang is not the beginning of the rainy season, so people need to proactively respond to drought, salinity, forest fires, especially protect the field and garden well to avoid damage.
“Rainy season often comes with thunderstorms, strong winds and tornadoes, people need to strengthen their houses to limit roof collapse,; When sheltering from rain, you should go inside, absolutely do not shelter from rain under tall trees or electricity poles ... to prevent lightning, "the Director of An Giang Meteorological and Hydrometeorological Station noted.
