Ensuring traffic safety during the rainy season on Highway 37 through Son La province

10:26:26, 19/09/2022 National Highway 37 passes through Son La province with a length of nearly 140 km, this is an important route in the socio-economic development of the locality and the Northwest region. Renovation and upgrading projects have been implemented, however, due to the complicated terrain, in the rainy season, this road is often eroded, causing danger to people and vehicles participating in traffic.

Highway 37 is one of the important routes serving traffic from Son La, Dien Bien to Hanoi

National Highway 37, section through Chen pass, Bac Yen district is one of the locations where frequent landslides occur. On steep passes, successively encountered landslides with a large amount of soil and rocks, trees uprooted from the talus and spilled onto the road surface. This made it difficult for vehicles to move.

Trinh Tien Dau, a cargo driver on the Phu Tho - Son La route, shared that every day, he carries goods to Son La and back along this route. Every time it rains, Highway 37 often collapses, making traveling very difficult and dangerous for drivers. Everyone wants the authorities to have a plan to ensure safety for people and vehicles to travel conveniently.
According to statistics, from the beginning of September 2022 until now, this route has appeared nearly 60 positions of positive and negative slopes, the volume of soil and rock being eroded is over 10,000 m3. At critical points, the traffic assurance unit has arranged machinery to be on duty. However, the fix is still difficult.

Soil and rocks from the ravine spill onto Highway 37 after every heavy rain

Mud and soil from landslides and alluvium on Highway 37, section through Bac Yen district, make traffic difficult

Mr. Nguyen Van Loi, Deputy Head of Road Management and Maintenance Department, Department of Transport of Son La province informed that traffic assurance plans have been developed every year. However, due to topographical characteristics, this route still has unexpected landslides. In addition, rainstorms often occur during the night, so it is very difficult for the units to mobilize machines and people to overcome. Along with that, every year, National Highway 37 repair and upgrade projects are periodically implemented by the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam to serve the people's travel needs smoothly, smoothly and safely.

Motor vehicles are mobilized to level the soil and rock, ensuring smooth traffic

National Highway 37 is the route responsible for connecting Mai Son, Phu Yen and Bac Yen districts with the center of Son La province; serving socio-economic development, hunger eradication and poverty alleviation, search and rescue, disaster reduction and assurance of regional defense and security. This is also the route to break the monopoly of National Highway 6, ensuring traffic from Son La, Dien Bien to Hanoi when there is a traffic jam on Highway 6. Therefore, from May to October every year, The province has asked the route management units to arrange vehicles, machinery and human resources on duty 24/24 to ensure smooth traffic. However, the road has been invested and built for a long time, going through an area with complicated terrain conditions, affected by rain and floods, so there is still congestion and traffic insecurity.

Mr. Cao Viet Thinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief of the Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of the province, said that the rainy season in 2022, especially after the storm No. 2 , No. 3 and the rain from September 9 to 12, caused great damage to traffic works. According to statistics, the whole province has more than 6,100 positions of sunken slopes, alluvial surface of roads, culverts and trenches with a volume of more than 30,000 m3.
In the face of unusual weather developments, relevant units have actively grasped and identified key locations at risk of congestion before the rainy season. At the same time, the maintenance units have made plans to ensure traffic, arranged materials, equipment, machinery, and human resources appropriately, ready when any situation occurs to repair and restore damage. damaged works in the fastest time, meeting the travel needs of the people.
