200 irrigation reservoirs were seriously damaged

14:0:44, 10/06/2020 On June 1, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent a telegram to Hanoi People's Committee and provinces with dams and irrigation reservoirs to strengthen the management and ensure dam safety in 2020.

According to the General Department of Irrigation, since 2010 up to now, 70 lakes and irrigation dams across the country have had incidents; in which, 2017 is 23 lakes, 2018 is 12 lakes, 2019 is 11 lakes ... And most recently, on May 28, Dam Thin Lake (Phu Tho province) occurred a dam failure. Damage incidents not only cause damage to buildings but also flood property damage, threaten the safety of the lives of people in the downstream areas ...
Nationwide, there are still 1,200 irrigation reservoirs damaged, degraded, lack of flood discharge capacity; in which about 200 lakes were seriously damaged, potentially causing incidents ... Meanwhile, the hydro-meteorological agency said that from now until the end of 2020 there will be 11-13 storms, tropical depressions operating in the South China Sea; in which, 5-6 storms directly affect the mainland and are likely to cause heavy rain on a large scale ...
Facing this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development requires provinces and cities having dams and reservoirs to direct relevant units to regularly or periodically inspect and evaluate the current status of works; On duty at work 24/24 during the time of rain, flood to detect and promptly handle the hazards, damage, incidents from the first hour ... Besides, the provinces and cities allocating local budgets to repair and upgrade dam safety and irrigation reservoirs ..
